Samples of Interview Lighting
Many brands of lighting are available upon request (Aputure, Nanlite etc.)
1 Light - In Front. on an angle.
Using natural light as the fill light and a small hair-light to light the edge of the head and shoulders to separate the interviewee from the background.
Kit:
1x 500W ZSYB Bi-color light that can be dimmed.
1x Nanlite Forza 60W for the backlight.
1x 120cm Triopo Softbox
2x C-stands
2x Sandbags (No charge)
2x 10m Power cables (No charge)
Daily Rate: 4,300.00 THB
2 Lights - In front of a single Presenter. Usually the light on his left (Fill Light) will be lower wattage so his face profile facing the camera is less bright than the brighter light (Key light) focused on his face away from the camera. This is an ideal look. Windows in the back are providing back-light.
Kit:
2x ZSYB 500W Bi-color lights
2x Heavy Duty Light Stands with long Boom Arms
2x 120cm Triopo Softboxes
2x Sandbags (No charge)
2x 10m Power cables (No charge)
Daily Rate: 6,500.00 THB
2 Lights - Interesting setup. The chap on the left will have the front of his face well lite, while the chap on the right will have the light falling on his face profile away from the camera. It is likely that there is some existing overhead lights from the building in use.
Kit:
2x 500W ZSYB 500W Bi-color lights
2x C-stands
2x 120cn Triopo Softboxes
2x Sandbags (No charge)
2x 10m Power cables (No charge)
Daily Rate: 6,000.00 THB
3 Lights - 2 In Front. On an angle with a back wall highlight
This will brighten the face towards the cameras, but the back wall light will give an interesting lighted, often colored background effect.
Kit:
2x 500W ZSYB 500W Bi-color lights
1x 15C Pavotube RGB Light Tube
2x C-stands
2x 120cn Triopo Softboxes
2x Sandbags (No charge)
3x 10m Power cables (No charge)
Daily Rate: 7,500.00 THB
3 Lights - 2 equal lights focusing on each subject. These are sometimes more overhead using extra-long boom arms. In this case the 3rd light is in front. Rather unusual. I would prefer this over and behind the two subjects to highlight their hair and shoulders separating them from the background. (In this case I think the background is already reflecting a lot of light)
Kit:
2x 500W ZSYB 500W Bi-color lights
1x 60W Nanlite Forza or 6c Pavotube with Egg-crate
2x 120cn Triopo Softboxes
1x 55cm Triopo Softbox (or Snoot)
2x Heavy Duty Stands with Long Boom Arms
1x C-stand with Boom Arm
2x Sandbags (No charge)
3x 10m Power cables (No charge)
Daily Rate: 8,500.00 THB
Top Down Lighting - Often used for Groups to show everyone as equals without any single person standing out from the group.
Kit:
2x 500W ZSYBH 500W Bi-color lights
1x 300W Nanlite Forza
2x 120cm Triopo Shallow Square Softboxes
1x 90cm Triopo Shallow Square Softbox
2x Heavy Duty Stands
1x Long Horizontal Bar (From Back-Screen)
4x Sandbags (No charge)
3x 10m Power Cables (No charge)
Daily Rate: 10.000.00 THB

THE REMBRANT EFFECT
The Rembrandt effect is a classic lighting technique used in video and photography to create a dramatic, three-dimensional look. It is characterized by a small, inverted triangle of light (known as the "Rembrandt patch") on the subject's cheek that is opposite the main light source.
Key Characteristics
Dramatic Effect: The high contrast between light and shadow (chiaroscuro) adds depth, mood, and intensity to a scene. This makes it a staple technique in genres like film noir and psychological thrillers.
Defined Triangle: The signature triangle of light should be no wider than the subject's eye and no longer than their nose.
Minimal Equipment: The effect can be achieved with a single key light and, optionally, a reflector or a less powerful fill light to control shadow intensity.
How to Achieve the Effect in Video Lighting
The basic setup involves specific positioning of the key light relative to the subject and the camera:
Position the Key Light: Place your main light source high and to one side of the subject, typically at a 45-degree angle horizontally from the camera axis and slightly above the subject's eye line (about 10-20 degrees).
Angle Downward: Angle the light source down toward the face so the nose shadow connects with the shadow on the opposite cheek, forming the distinctive triangle of light.
Control Shadows:
For a more dramatic, high-contrast look, use a hard light source or move the light further away.
For a softer, more natural appearance (often preferred for beauty portraits or talking heads), use a light modifier like a softbox or an octa, and/or add a white or silver reflector on the shadow side to bounce some light back into the face.
If using a second (fill) light, ensure its power is no more than half that of the key light to maintain the dramatic contrast.
Manage the Background: Use a dark or neutral background to prevent the viewer's eye from being distracted and to emphasize the contrast on the subject's face.
Best Use Cases
Rembrandt lighting is a versatile technique that works well for:
Dramatic portraits
Cinematic storytelling (e.g., film noir, moody scenes)
Interviews and talking heads that require a more serious or artistic tone
Subjects with rounder faces or prominent cheekbones, as it adds definition and shape
